Dunglish expression of the Day

04.07.08 | written by jilske | Comment?

My English has much improved over the last 6 months.  However, sometimes I still struggle to think of certain words or expressions (especially pre-coffee) and in those situations automatically revert to translating from Dutch.  For example yesterday morning, when I said the following to a colleague:

“I can’t get anything down my throat today”

We were queuing for a coffee/breakfast and of course the correct English would have been “feeling rather full today” or simply “not really that hungry”.  I didn’t realize what I had said until I saw the (meanwhile familiar) strange look on his face.  Though the familiarity might be more me than the Dunglish, but anyway, we learn something new every day :-)

Oh and I just realized, feeling rather full might sound very weird when translated literally to Dutch.  Haha, I guess a dirty mind truly is a joy forever!
