Behind the lens – July 2013

Jilske Photography - Inle Lake fisherman at sunset
camera settings: 1/500th sec, f13, ISO 200, 120mm

The Place
Inle Lake, one of the big four tourist destinations in Burma. The Intha people are famous for their iconic leg-rowing fishermen.

The Story
When traveling & photographing, I try to stay away from images that have already been made. The fishermen definitely have been photographed from every angle and corner of the lake. So much so that many tour groups now schedule shoots for tourists, so you can hire your own fisherman (or two or three) for your photographic pleasure if you wish. Not really my thing I have to admit. But when I returned from a daytrip down the lake, we encountered this lone guy fishing. The light this time of day was perfect for shooting into the low setting sun – helped by some haze from burning crops in the mountains. How could I not photograph this scene right? So incredibly beautiful. I made several exposures, trying to get the right moment (a clear silhouette showing the leg rowing) and align his boat and hat with the sun and mountains in the background. Sounds easy – except I was in a little boat myself, turning and wobbling around, trying to keep myself from falling off — and my camera into the water!
